According to law enforcement, the criminals stole 450 million New Zealand dollars ($265 million) in digital assets last year. Investigators have established a link between the New Zealand suspect and other participants in the case. The man has been charged with assault, fraud and money laundering, while 12 other defendants, including residents of Auckland (New Zealand) and California (USA), also face similar charges.

According to the US prosecutor's office, the group actively used crypto exchanges to transfer and launder the stolen funds. After withdrawing digital assets, they purchased expensive cars, real estate, jewelry, and securities. To disguise themselves, the defendants used several stages of transactions through different exchanges, which allowed them to remain out of sight of regulators for some time. However, investigative actions by New Zealand law enforcement agencies together with their American colleagues helped to uncover the scheme and identify the suspects.

Earlier, the US Department of Justice confirmed that Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm will appear in court on July 14, 2025.
