In Russia, energy consumption capacity has decreased following the ban on mining

The imposed restrictions on cryptocurrency mining in certain regions of the Russian Federation have led to a reduction in energy consumption capacity in the country by an average of 300 MW. This was reported by "Kommersant" citing data from the Ministry of Energy.

The largest amount — 320 MW — was in the regions of Siberia: parts of the Irkutsk region, Buryatia, and the Trans-Baikal Territory. The ministry noted that the ban on cryptocurrency mining allowed the country to go through the period of peak loads in January 2025 without imposing restrictions on consumers. Acting CEO of the Irkutsk Electric Grid Company Ilya Brilliantov added that during the autumn-winter period, 308 MW of power consumed by legal miners was freed up in parts of the Angara region.

"These capacities were unclaimed during this period, and the end consumer did not feel any impact from the ban on the quality of electricity," he added.

In the regions of the North Caucasus, the load on the power grids decreased by approximately 50 MW.
