Cryptocurrency exchange DMM Bitcoin shuts down after hacker attack
The Japanese cryptocurrency exchange DMM Bitcoin is forced to close due to a hacking attack that occurred in the spring of this year. This was reported by the platform's press service.
It is known that in May, a criminal hacked into the DMM Bitcoin server, obtained the private key from the platform's cryptocurrency wallet, and stole 4,500 bitcoins valued at around $20 million at the time. Employees of the exchange disabled the functions for trading operations, withdrawing funds, and creating new accounts.
After that, representatives of the exchange promised to fully compensate clients for their losses and purchased bitcoins to return the coins to the victims. However, the company was unable to restart its business.
In November, it became known that the Seamoon Protocol portal, along with its games and anime, was shutting down, and on December 2, anonymous sources reported that the exchange would not resume operations. By March 2025, the exchange's management plans to transfer the bitcoins to the financial organization SBI VC Trade, whose employees will distribute the coins among the victims of the criminals.
