Coinbase Exchange: Hackers Stole Data of Almost 70,000 Users
The largest US crypto exchange Coinbase has clarified the scope of the incident, which took place in December 2024 but was only disclosed last week.

In a notice filed with the Maine Attorney General's Office, the company said the hacker attack resulted in the theft of personal information from 69,461 customers, or less than 1 percent of the platform's total customer base. According to data released during the regulatory investigation, the hackers obtained the names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of users. The attackers also obtained customers' bank details, photos of identification documents, and transaction histories.
The attackers gained access to this data by bribing support staff outside the US, which allowed them to gain internal access to the exchange's system. This event was part of a larger wave of attacks on crypto infrastructure that has been previously reported in the media.
Coinbase previously disclosed information about a massive leak of customer data, which was facilitated by the platform's support workers from abroad. The company's incident report was sent to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
