According to the department, the fraudsters gained the trust of the users and then redirected them to fake websites. After depositing funds, the money went through more than 75 bank accounts of shell companies and then was sent abroad, disguised as internal transfers.

The scammers promised clients high returns on their "investments," but when users tried to withdraw their money, they were asked to make additional payments supposedly to cover profit taxes. Some of the stolen money was recovered in 2023. Specifically, the U.S. Secret Service (SAS) found the money in a foreign bank account and initiated a civil forfeiture process. After court proceedings, authorities managed to recover $7 million.

Now victims should contact the SAS to have their losses compensated.
