The Kingdom of Bhutan has introduced cryptocurrency payments for tourists
The Bhutanese government and local digital bank DK Bank have implemented the Binance Pay platform for tourism payments, making the country the first country to formally integrate cryptocurrency into its tourism infrastructure.

The service allows travelers to pay for flights, accommodation, excursions, and even street food via QR codes using Bitcoin, BNB, USDC, and 97 other crypto assets. All transactions are automatically converted into the local currency, Bhutanese Ngultrum, via DK Bank. At the time of launch, over 100 local merchants, including hotels, restaurants, and craft workshops, had connected to the system. For small businesses that do not have traditional payment terminals, a smartphone with a QR code is enough to accept payments. This simplifies interaction with tourists who have faced the problem of refusal to accept international cards. According to Binance, the integration will reduce currency conversion fees and expand access to global payment instruments.
“This is a step towards digital transformation for Bhutan. Now anyone can pay for a trip using cryptocurrency, and local entrepreneurs can access new markets without complex technical barriers,” Binance noted.
Experts emphasize that the initiative will support the growth of the tourism sector, especially in remote regions of the country. However, success depends on user awareness and the stability of the infrastructure. For now, Binance and DK Bank plan to expand the network of partners, including transport companies and cultural centers.
